1st House: The Ascendant

1st house meanings: physical body, constitution, appearance and disposition. Personality, character, self, ego, behavior. The head. Birth conditions.

The 1st house is the main house of a chart, influencing all other matters in life. It represents you on a very intimate level, being the most personal point in a birth chart. The Sun will be shared by everyone born in a certain month, the Moon will stay in the same sign for about 3 days, the Ascendant changes every 2 hours. The Ascendant will always be much closer to your real personality, disposition and preferences than the Sun and the Moon. Much about a native’s life, behavior, preferences and overall trends can be inferred by knowing their Ascendant.

The 1st house, or the Ascendant, is the most important house in a chart as this is the starting point from where all the other houses are counted. Astronomically, the 1st house is determined by the sign rising at eastern horizon at the time of birth.

The 1st house deals with the birth conditions, representing the smoothness or complications of birth. For instance, malefics like Mars or Saturn in the ascendant will usually indicate complicated or caesarean births. While benefics like Venus will denote a smoother process.

The Ascendant will describe very intimately the tendencies and life of a native. Each of the 12 signs will imbibe certain trends, the 27 nakshatras will similarly direct a native in a certain way. Planets and aspects to the Ascendant will add and influence a native.

  • Aries Ascendant: Life is filled with energy, energetic enthusiasm is a mark of life for the native. The native must be constantly doing something, or moving in some manner, stagnation causes great dread to Aries.

Planets in the 1st House

  • Sun in the Ascendant: Very strong life force, although it could lead to some excesses. The native could be self-centered, or somewhat of an egomaniac. Good leadership skills and a tendency to get ahead in life. Very competitive. They could be the eldest son. For men, this could give a tendency towards baldness.
  • Moon in the Ascendant: Strong sensitivity, deep and profound emotions and senses. Smells, tastes and hearing could all be heightened. This could lead to things like noise sensitivity or allergies. Strong attachment to home, mother and comfortable and cozy places away from crowds. They could lack caution, acting in rash or rushed ways. A beautiful, strong body and a nice head of hair are indicated. Love for travel, exploration and all new experiences. They could have a hard time paying attention or overbooking themselves with too many projects.
  • Jupiter in the Ascendant: Joyous and hopeful attitude, as well as a good degree of luck in life. Inspirational and philosophical in speech, they tend to give good advice. Jupiter expands, so this could lead to extremes in the body. For instance, someone excessively tall or excessive fat. A problem with these natives is that they could be preachy, feeling the need for people to always accept their ways and ideas as the ultima truth.
  • Venus in the Ascendant: The native tends to be attractive or beautiful, with great charm, captivating others. Love for beauty and art. Strong craving for relationships and overall socialization. Luck and good fortune in life.

A skinny or lanky body is usually seen with this placement. Some self-esteem issues tend to be present, with the native feeling insecure or self-conscious.
  • Rahu in the Ascendant: Strong fate or destiny in life, as this is a karmic point. Sudden events and shifts are a constant in their lives, as if leading them towards a certain direction. Physically, similarly to Jupiter, a tendency towards big could be present. The native will tend to have strong desires, specially on a material level. Attraction to politics or technology.
  • Ketu in the Ascendant: The native could feel like an outcast or outsider. An otherworldly life, with a feeling of disconnection to what is around you. Attraction towards spiritual matters or occult matters. They tend to have strong ideals or a strong attachment to identities.

Any planet placed in the Ascendant becomes a strong influence in life, with the planet’s qualities becoming a clear marker in the native’s behavior. For instance, Venus would favor artistic and charming behavior, while Mars would favor a more direct and rash one.

Ruler of the 1st in different houses

The ruler of the ascendant is a very important point in a chart, as it sets the tone and strength of the ascendant.

  • Lord of the 1st in the 1st: A strong, brave and intelligent native. The placement here makes the native a tad self-centered, as his life source tends to come from himself.
  • Lord of the 1st in the 2nd: The native will be scholarly and fond of learning. The native will like socializing and being part of a group.
  • Lord of the 1st in the 3rd: Courageous, intelligent and strong. The native might be very lustful. A key thing in life here is facing challenges and conquering things, this is a placement of will power. The native could also be involved with communication.
  • Lord of the 1st in the 4th: Prosperity and comforts are usually available to the native. Emotions are a key thing in life. The native’s actions tend to “come from the heart”, meaning that his main concern is feeling emotionally satisfied.
  • Lord of the 1st in the 5th: With the 5th house, the main concern of the native is feeling creatively fulfilled. Expressing himself or raising children are key concerns. Creativity and self-expression are the key things in life.
  • Lord of the 1st in the 6th: This is the house of conflict, so the native will be somewhat fond of turmoil. Fighting, drugs, alcohol and addictions are all matter that deal with the 6th house. This is a double-edged sword. The placement could denote agents of chaos, meaning people that create and seek conflict, or people who destroy things. But alternatively, it could show someone that delves and fixes the chaos, like doctors, therapists or those fighting crime.
  • Lord of the 1st in the 7th: The 7th house is all about relationships and connection, so socializing is the main thing in life for this native. Constantly being in contact with others, specially a romantic partner, is key for this native. Being alone could be hard with this placement. The native could also be fond of foreign lands and cultures.
  • Lord of the 1st in the 8th: Similar connotations to the 6th house could happen here, as this is similarly a house dealing with trouble and conflict. Besides that, the 8th house rules secrets, occult matters and other people’s money. So the native could be very fond of keeping secrets, hiding things or finding out other people’s secrets. These natives could deal with espionage or detective work, they are also excellent researchers. They could dabble with finances and investments, specially speculative ones.
  • Lord of the 1st in the 9th: Fortunate, lucky, generally blessed and fond of wisdom. The 9th house placement tends to make the native very independent, so these natives could go into a rebellious route, deviating from what is expected of them. This could be in regards to parents, teachers, society or others. The native will have a very strong will, doing what he considers right/important regardless of the consequences he may face. The native could deal with teaching, publishing or preaching. The native could be fond of travelling.
  • Lord of the 1st in the 10th: The 10th house deals with work, public life and our most important actions in life. Life tends to be smooth, with the native focused on doing what truly matters to him. The native would be very focused and concerned about his career and making an impact in the world.
  • Lord of the 1st in the 11th: The 11th house deals with groups, socialization and great desires. The native’s love being a part of groups, organizations and institutions. Socializing is a key thing in their lives. A key issue for them is recognition, accomplishment and getting recognized by people.
  • Lord of the 1st in the 12th: The 12th is the house of losses, endings and dissolution. The native will find pleasure in seclusion, or being away from others. In some points of their lives, they could even be forced into isolation. Early life, or childhood, could deal with illnesses or harsh conditions. A lifelong interest in escapism, fiction, or dream worlds could exist. As well as passion for all things spiritual.

Generally, the ascendant lord is stronger in Kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) and Trikonas (1, 5, 9). If the ascendant lord is in his sign of exaltation, that would show a strong ascendant. The house occupied by the 1st lord will always be an important point of the native’s life, indicating a lifelong pursuit or concern for the native. For instance, the 9th house would show a passion for knowledge, while the 5th would show a focus on the creative aspects of life.

When the ascendant lord ends up in Dusthanas (6, 8, 12), some complications will be ascribed to life. Turbulences, conflict, addictions or vicious trends could come into play. A lot of times, a certain frisson for chaos exists, and the native will enjoy creating or dealing with trouble. For instance, someone that likes fighting or arguing.

June 2023 in Astrology

June is a month that starts with something odd in the air. Saturn will turn retrograde on the 17th, and its slowing down motion in the early weeks of the month will mark the mood of things. When a planet is changing his motion, he sits in a state called Stationary. Stationary planets become more noticeable, as the slower movement makes their effects stronger.

With Saturn, I always find that things feel slower in the weeks surrounding this shift in motion. Saturn is the planet of slow things, so it seems to have an even more marked station phase. Delays, slowdowns and a calmer mood will tend to dominate the early weeks of June because of this.

As Saturn is the planet of karma, these periods where it is most active could show important turning points in life as well. In a lot of ways, we could be pushed towards a direction in early June with this transit. This doesn’t have to be a negative thing. It usually deals with making necessary changes, moving into the right direction and taking responsibility for our lives and desires.

  • 03/06/2023 23:42 Full Moon in Scorpio 19°07’07”
  • 07/06/2023 10:20 Mercury in Taurus
  • 15/06/2023 08:46 Sun in Gemini
  • 17/06/2023 12:19 Saturn retrograde 13°01’42” Aquarius
  • 18/06/2023 00:37 New Moon in Gemini 02°32’28”
  • 24/06/2023 03:13 Mercury in Gemini
  • 30/06/2023 13:46 Neptune retrograde 03°30’14” Pisces
  • 30/06/2023 16:47 Mars in Leo

Aligned with that, the entire month of June will be marked by Mars in Cancer, which I mentioned on last month’s predictions. Mars debilitated gives a propensity towards fights, arguments and quarrels. People seem to be in a feisty mood, getting worked up about small things. It is not the easiest of times, but we should strive to handle our emotions and control our impulses. This transit is a great opportunity to learn how to manage our Mars, how to apply our energy in productive manners, rather than destructive ways. On June 30th, Mars will enter Leo, where it will sit much stronger starting July on a new leaf.

Neptune will turn retrograde on the 30th. As I’ve said in the beginning, there is something odd in the air. Neptune is the planet of illusions, deception and things out of this world. So its stationary phase late in June will cast a shadow of confusion, dreaminess and lack of clarity in the world. On the positive, Neptune promotes pleasure, escapism and prophetic dreams. On the negative, excessive escapism, a lack of practicality and indulgence can come.

With this intense Neptune, late June becomes a time where we could be somewhat gloomy, distanced or with our heads in the clouds. This is a great time for visualization, dreaming up goals and projects, as well as meditation and other spiritual pursuits, such as prayer.

It is an interesting contrast, having Saturn influencing the early parts of the month and Neptune the end of it. As I’ve said, something odd in the air. Saturn is the planet of order, of materializing, of practicality. It deals with making things real, dealing with the tangible. Neptune deals with illusion and dissolution, with letting go and forgetting about the material. In a lot of ways, we will be pulled in two opposing directions this June.

June will be a month of contrasts. Saturn and Neptune. Saturn’s sense of productivity, dampened by a weak Mars. Jupiter-Rahu‘s ambition contrasted with Neptune’s dissolution. Clashing energies on many fronts.

In summary, the first part of the month will have a strong influence of Saturn, which will tend to slow down or delay things. The final part of the month will have a strong influence of Neptune, which will promote dreams and escapism. They are polar opposites in many ways, but their overall effect will tend to slow down the mood, making us stop and take things easier. Considering we just walked from the eclipses in May and April, this is a good break, a good breather to absorb the changes and regroup before moving forward. June will be a great month to plan, organize and adjust ourselves.

Some other notes:

  • Early June, around the Full Moon (03/06), could have some issues in regards to police, courts and abuse of power. Excesses could happen, as well as protests in regards to these matters.
  • Similarly, disagreements are possible early in the month.
  • The New Moon will go a lot with Neptune’s energy, promoting dreams and exploring possibilities. It will be a great time to consider fresh perspectives or dream up new projects.
  • The end of the month could deal with things heating up in many ways. Arguments, final straws and fights are possible. We could also be dealing with extreme weather or some calamities.

On some meta notes, I’ve added a new section with short updates on the home page. These are my not-so-daily predictions, talking about interesting transits or other astrological events. An archive of these updates can be seen here. Also, the website was redesigned with a fresh coat of paint, much prettier and smoother.
